A dangerous scam can come to an end
Have you received an automated phone call, or so-called robocall?
Many robocalls are useful, recently, I received a robocall to remind me of an upcoming appointment. But crooks have gotten ahold of this technology, and now nearly half of the 47.8 billion robocalls made annually are scams.
These scams are not just irritating, they have a real economic impact on American families, often directly targeting our senior citizens.
I am proud to have co-sponsored a bipartisan bill to stop bad robocalls. This legislation will require the Federal Communications Commission to create rules that will:
- protect consumers from the unwanted solicitations by phone and text message by verifying numbers, and blocking spam calls;
- require thorough recordkeeping to ensure callers respect privacy and consumer consent;
- and prevent companies from circumventing these rules.
I am urging my colleagues in the Senate to swiftly pass this legislation so we can begin helping the families impacted by these scams and stop them from claiming any more victims.
