Salmon, orcas, and us!
Today is World Oceans Day and people around the globe are honoring our oceans! In honor of World Ocean's Day, sign our petition and tell the Senate: pass our climate change legislation NOW.
Washington's 2nd Congressional District includes all of San Juan and Island counties, and portions of Whatcom, Skagit, and Snohomish counties – in our District, the ocean plays a starring role in our economy and way of life.
From the islands and mountains to river deltas, our home is lush with natural beauty and biodiversity. We cohabitate with critical Northwest species like Pacific salmon and orca whales.
Our proximity to the Pacific allows us to be a powerhouse of international trade, aerospace technology, and marine manufacturing – including the Naval Station Everett and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
As good stewards of the region, it is critical that we work to protect our environment. Recently, we passed landmark climate change legislation in the House of Representatives. The legislation would require the United States to remain within the Paris Agreement after 2020. The Paris Agreement:
-
pursues efforts to limit global temperature increases;
-
increases our ability to adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change and slow greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining food production; and
-
advances economic pathways towards climate-resilient development.
We cannot allow this bill to get stuck in the Senate. It is imperative that we take immediate action to slow climate change – there is no time for partisan bickering or bureaucracy.
