Real Talk
Americans deserve real talk — not oversimplified approaches to complex problems. So here's the deal: yesterday, I voted to terminate Trump's national emergency declaration.
We've spoken about this before: building a wall does not remedy our issues with immigration or national security.
Congress passed bipartisan agreements in both the House and the Senate to provide funding for effective border security. I believe, and many of my colleagues in Congress believe, that the best way to move forward is by:
- hiring additional Customs and Border Protection agents and additional immigration judges to review asylum cases;
- investing in technology that would examine vehicles crossing the border;
- and providing aid for economic development to end corruption in El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala.
Congress has a Constitutional obligation to serve as a check on the president, and in this case it was appropriate.
