Larsen: Universal Background Checks Will Help Keep Guns Out of Criminals’ Hands

Larsen Endorses Initiative 594 to Close Background Check Loopholes and Make Our Communities Safer

EVERETT—With Congress failing to act in response to horrific acts of gun violence, Rep. Rick Larsen, WA-02, today announced his support for a Washington state initiative to extend universal background checks to gun sales.

Larsen is joining the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility to support Initiative Measure No. 594, which will require gun sales online and at gun shows to undergo criminal and public safety background checks.

“From Tucson to Sandy Hook, from a movie theater in Colorado to a place of worship in Wisconsin, too many communities across our country been ripped apart by horrific gun violence,” Larsen said. “Congress has failed to act in the face of these tragedies, so it is time that we stand up in Washington state to make our communities safer."

“Four in ten gun sales in our country take place without background checks to make sure that the purchaser is not a criminal or a danger to public safety. Initiative 594 will fix that by requiring background checks for all gun sales, whether through a licensed dealer, online or at a gun show.”

Larsen’s support arrives as the legislature is set to consider whether to pass I-594 or pass along for voters to approve in November.

“We are so grateful for the support of leaders like Rick Larsen, who recognize the need for principled, courageous action to protect our families and safety,” said Zach Silk, Campaign Manager for I-594. “With too many politicians in Washington and Olympia afraid to take a stand against the corporate gun lobby, Larsen’s endorsement reflects overwhelming public support for common sense reforms like I-594—and the need to take action.”

The Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility has submitted 346,000 signatures in support of the initiative. If the Washington state legislature does not pass the measure, it will be placed on the November ballot.
